IBM S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server – Generation 5

Mainframe computers consist of central processing unit, memory unit, data storage hard disk unit, cartridge reading and writing unit, terminal unit, printer unit, control unit used to access the server. Loading data into these computers was originally done with punch cards, punched tape, and magnetic disks instead of terminals, cartridges, and hard disk units.

An IBM S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server – Generation 5 model mainframe with a production date of 1990 and the hardware parts connected to this computer will be exhibited in the classroom.

It is the main server where the central processing unit of the main computer is located and all units of the system are controlled by software. The IBM System/390 is the discontinued fifth generation of the System/360 instruction set architecture. The first ESA/390 computer was the Enterprise System/9000 (ES/9000) family, which were introduced in 1990. These were followed by the 9672 CMOS System/390 mainframe family in the mid-1990s. These systems followed the IBM 3090, with over a decade of follow-ons. The ESA/390 was succeeded by the 64-bit z/Architecture in 2000.

Hitachi Data Systems 7700 Storage System

It is the hard disk unit used to store and load data on the server of the mainframe computer. Hitachi Data Systems introduced the HDS 7700 Scalable Array in 1995. This direct access storage device has established an unbeatable track record in the S/390®-compatible market by delivering nonstop operation, outstanding high performance, and a wide range of storage management features. The 7700 packs unprecedented levels of power, throughput, capacity, and scalability in the smallest of footprints, yielding the lowest overall cost of operation. With support for disaster recovery and data migration, performance management and tuning, high-availability software, and Year 2000-compliance solutions, the 7700 addresses business-critical storage requirements throughout your enterprise.

3490-C22 IBM Magnetic Tape Subsystem Model C22

It is a magnetic card reading and writing unit used to upload and store data to the host server. The 3490E C22 tape drive is the highest performance tape offering from IBM for RS/6000. It is a magnetic card reading and writing unit used to upload and store data to the host server. In this unit, 1/2 inch cartridges (magnetic tape) are used in 810 MB capacity cartridge, magnetic small tapes are used.

3490-B20 IBM Magnetic Tape Subsystem (B20)

The IBM 3490 is a family of Magnetic Tape Subsystems designed to provide significant tape subsystem performance and cartridge capacity improvements. The 3490-B20 is a 36-track, 2-drive component for an IBM 3490 tape subsystem. It is designed to provide significant tape subsystem performance and cartridge capacity improvements. The B20 Tape Drive Unit writes in a new Enhanced Capability format and uses the existing cartridge system tape and is capable of reading cartridges in earlier formats, providing for ease of migration. The B20 can be field upgraded to the B40, providing granularity from a minimum two 36-track tape drive configuration to a maximum four 36-track tape drive configuration.

IDEA (Integrated) Computer Terminal

Terminal and integrated display unit for accessing and using mainframe computers by connecting to remote control units from where the mainframe computer is located. On the back of the terminal, there are keyboard, printer, coaxial cable (for the connection of the local/remote Unit connected to the main roof), display and power connection input/output interfaces (connectors).

IDEA Terminal Keyboard

An alphanumeric keyboard (6-telephone type connector, connection cable).

Screen Protector

A piece (tinted to protect eyes from light reflected from the tube screen) screen front glass (with alligator clips with wires connected to the screen, to ground harmful currents reflected from the screen).

IBM 4245 Line Printer Series (D20)

The IBM 4245 Model D20 achieves a print speed of 2,000 LPM. This model attaches to the 3174 and 3274 Models 41 and 61 controllers, the 9370 Workstation Controller, and 4361 processor Workstation Adapter and Display/Printer Adapter.

IBM 6262 Impact Line Printer (022)

The IBM 6262 Impact Line Printer models are additions to the IBM family of intermediate speed impact line printers operating at 1,200, 1,400, and 2,200 lines per minute (LPM). The 6262 offers excellent print quality, enhanced and easier to use operator functions, and high reliability. (For IBM US, No Longer Available as of June 30, 1999) The 6262-022 is a 2200 LPM, with a 48 character set, 370 Channel Attach (byte-multiplexer, block-multiplexer, or selector channel) Impact Line Printer.
